Dried figs: shipments to the EU will be more expensive

AYDIN. Turkish dried fig exporters are facing rising prices due to the above-average number of reports of increased contamination with aflatoxin and ochratoxin. This is now also affecting export prices for shipments to the EU.

A solution is urgently required

Every year, the Aegean Dried Fruits and Products Exporters' Association collects around 700 mt of dried figs from its exporters, which are not allowed to enter the food trade due to high aflatoxin levels and are instead used in biogas plants for energy production. This method costs exporters a total of USD 5 million a year.

Aflatoxin occurs naturally and some foods are more prone to producing the mould toxin than others, but factors during harvesting and processing also play an important role. As unfavourable weather condition
