Dried figs: unbelievable amount of EU rejections

AYDIN. While the detection of fig wasps is good news, the trees are also being closely monitored for pests and diseases. Prices are an issue. EU border rejections are a big problem for Turkey’s dried figs.

Fig wasps detected

According to a statement issued by the Buharkent District Directorate of Agriculture and Forestry fig wasps have been detected on male trees. While the wasps are important for pollination, inspections are also ongoing for black fig flies, which are harmful as the larvae cause premature fruit drop, and for Fusarium, a fungus that impacts tree health and causes endosepsis, which reduces the quality of the fruits. Inspection teams are also advising producers.
