AYDIN. It is becoming increasingly evident that aflatoxin is a serious problem. The EU has rejected several deliveries from Turkey.

Aflatoxin is a problem

According to the EU database RASFF (the Rapid Alert System for Food and Feed) more than 20 shipments of dried figs from Turkey have been rejected since December because the aflatoxin values were too high. This season Turkey has so far exported considerably less than last year, namely 42,483 mt.

Supplies are starting to run low

The exporters and traders are currently holding most supplies in Turkey. Only few stocks remain with the farmers. Since blossoming will only start on a few weeks the trees will hardly be affected by the currently low temperatures.

This, however, does not stop some farmers and traders from speculating. The raw fig prices have increased to a level of 12-15 TRY/kg. Although supplies of EU quality figs are limited, the export prices are not expected to increase.
