Figs: Dip in exports

AYDIN. Judging by last year when the first official estimates for the dried fig production were announced in the middle of August, it is still a bit of a wait for this year’s estimates.

Producers relent

In 2016, about 72,000 mt of dried figs were produced in Turkey. Due to rains during the drying period, a large portion did, however, not have the desired quality. Traders reckon that most of the products that cannot be exported are already circulating in the domestic market.

Farmgate prices range between 14-16 TRY/kg. The export prices have also stabilised on a high level. Nonetheless, traders report that producers are still willing to negotiate.

Low risk appetite

Turkey is still only exporting a few hundred tons of dried figs each week. As much as 55,000 mt have already been exported, representing more than three quarters of the 2016 dried fig production.

The crop outlook is very promising. Some buyers are still, however, stocking up with figs at higher prices. The drying phase can still be critical for the fruits, so that lower prices are not to be expected at the beginning of the season.
