Figs: Traders advise against purchasing

AYDIN. Exports of dried figs from Turkey are only trickling along at present; they did not even reach 160 mt last week.

The season still goes on until the end of September, and 56,660 mt of dried figs have been shipped so far. The export volume is not likely to reach more than 60,000 mt this year. As much as 66,000 mt were exported in 2015/16 by contrast.

High temperatures and hot prices

Temperatures of 30-35 °C in growing regions such as Aydin are ripening the fruit on the trees; market players are expecting initial estimates for the new crop in the next few days. However, it is still too early for the first offers. Seeing as figs are harvested later than e.g. apricots or sultanas, they are often exposed to unfavourable weather conditions and precipitation during the drying phase, which can have significant impacts on the quality. Compared to potentially higher aflatoxin contamination, darker colouration is the least of worries. Farmgate prices for prompt deliveries are at a level of 14-16 TRY/kg, and traders are advising buyers to wait. Purchases at this level are hardly worthwhile.
