Flaxseed: concerns about oversupply

OTTAWA/BRUSSELS. Canadian market players are concerned about the consequences of a possible oversupply. The European Commission has lifted the non-tariff trade barriers on flaxseed shipments from Canada that have been in place since 2009.

Canada expects strong export demand

Last week, Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada (AAFC) published its latest forecast for the 2026/27 Canadian flaxseed season. At present, the outlook remains largely unchanged from the previous report; however, AAFC has significantly lowered the expected average price, bringing it to CAD 585/mt – which is even below the current season’s average price of CAD 590/mt.

The planting forecast remains at 305,000 ha (+22% year-on-year), whilst the production estimate, based on yield expectations that are still being kept
