Flaxseed: harvesting is 20% complete in Kazakhstan

NUR-SULTAN. Although production estimates have remained firm for flaxseed in Kazakhstan so far, harvesting is slow and the prices for the new crop are still on the rise. Limited supplies have prompted buyers to adjust their bids.

Disappointing yields

Production is set to decline sharply in Kazakhstan this year. Extreme heat and drought-like conditions have taken their toll in recent weeks. While official estimates state that the area sown ranges at 1,496 million ha, the Kazakh Grain Union reckons that this area is much smaller than anticipated. Kazakh Grain Union cereal and oilseed expert Evgeny Karabanov reckons that acreage raeht ranges at 1.35 million. Production is also expected to decline by 30% to 745,000-750,000 mt as opposed to last year.
