Flaxseed: price corrections discourage growers

OTTAWA/ASTANA. Compared to the 2021/2022 season, Canadian flaxseed prices have dropped dramatically, yet offers cannot match those from Russia and Kazakhstan. Growers could therefore make a drastic decision.

Lower sowing in Western Canada
Canadian flaxseed is largely grown in the western Canadian provinces of Saskatchewan, Alberta and Manitoba. For many farmers, however, the oilseed is no longer lucrative enough. The latest monthly report from Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada showed little change in the flaxseed market. It was still expected that the acreage would be reduced by 5% to 300,000 ha compared to the previous year and, under normal weather conditions, a yield reduction of 5% to 1.45 mt/ha was also to be expected.
