Flaxseed: visual defects and few offers

OTTAWA/ASTANA. Kazakh suppliers are holding back on offers in order to achieve higher prices - although the market was already waiting for the goods due to harvest delays.

Lack of alternatives

Initial shipments from Kazakhstan confirm the concerns of market players. The flaxseed from this year's crop has some visual defects, which are not only due to the fact that the seeds still needs to be cleaned. In particular, there are noticeable differences in colour and size. While a price reduction would actually be expected in view of this quality, prices are instead rising. The harvest was delayed due to rainfall, and production declined by more than a third year-on-year to around 545,000 mt.
