Grains and oilseeds: Iran war with huge impact

BRUSSELS. This week, the US and Israel-led attacks on Iran have vastly impacted grains and oilseeds. The conflict may very well weigh on demand for corn. Egypt has issued a tender for wheat. Soybean oil has climbed to a two-year high. EU imports have slumped for rapeseed.

Permanent disruption possible

The US and Israeli attacks on Iran have had a huge impact on the markets. Transport and insurance costs have risen sharply due to the war as freight forwarders, exporters and insurers are reluctant to carry the risk of shipping goods into the region affected by the crisis. As 20% of global oil is shipped through the Strait of Hormuz, the risk that freight traffic will be permanently disrupted is growing. In addition, Iran has temporarily banned all agri-food exports.
