Prices follow an upward trajectory. Recent rains in the North regions prevent farmers from entering the fields. Favorable agro-meteorological conditions are crucial for a successful harvest.

Will prices continue the upward trend?

SOFIA. Prices seem far away from softening. Since January, average purchasing prices of barley have been steadily following an upward trend, starting from about 0.130 EUR/kg EXW Bulgaria while currently tenaciously holding the upper beat at about 0.142 EUR/kg EXW Bulgaria.

Usually, barley’s harvest should have already started on a massive scale so far in the season, but because of recent rains, harvest has been postponed in the North regions – the regions where the highest collective output of barley is recorded every year. The prices of barley seem to even gain momentum, which might not cool off soon since aggregate output this year is projected to be lower. According to the Ministry of Agriculture, this year’s available for harvest arable land stands by 20.4% less than what it used to be during the previous season.

Current market developments

In recent months, the majority of deals have been executed on the domestic market. Traded quantities are small, and since exports this past season have been lagging behind those of the previous few years, the building up of higher stocks is inevitable. According to the Ministry of Agriculture, by the end of last week, remaining stock stood at 33,712 mt.
