SOFIA. Although the year has been generally weak for all nut crops because of unfavourable weather conditions in early spring, local farmers of hazelnuts fared better than their walnut counterparts.

The hazelnut quantity, although much shorter in supply than the walnuts’, was characterized by fully matured kernels. The hazelnut harvest in Bulgaria usually follows that of Turkey, having a time lapse of approximately a month/a month and a half. Although the crop is sold later on the international market, the organic hazelnut has always been a preferred commodity by local and foreign buyers. As a result, the demand for the last few years has been growing, pushing-up its price higher and higher. Because of its taste and crispness, international buyers usually pay the premium price.

Hoping for a higher price
Usually, by the second week of October, farmers have collected all hazelnuts and set a price. Instead of taking a full advantage of the unusually belated for the season supply of Turkish hazelnuts, most farmers are still holding onto their crops, hoping to receive a higher price. Whether an unexpected hike in the supply of Turkish hazelnuts on the international market will untie their hands is to be seen.
