Hazelnuts: far cry from reality

ORDU. Hazelnut suppliers are sounding the alarm bells at the start of the new season in Turkey. Although farmers are happy with the crop size and the shell-kernel ratio is excellent, another problem is emerging that has prompted Ferrero to react swiftly.

Ferrero jumps to action

The nuts cracked so far show an excellent ratio between shells and kernels (randiman). While the average is 50:50, this year's ratio is 48% shells to 52% kernels or even higher as suppliers report. The crop size is also good. Trouble, however, is that the size of the kernels and the shells is smaller than in recent years. First samples from the orchards indicate that volumes of 13-15 mm sized kernels are alarmingly low and that kernels bigger than 15 mm are very scarce.
