ORDU. New demands are few and far between on the Turkish market for hazelnuts lately, but contract sales were more plentiful last week. Exports on the other hand have increased in the time since the beginning of the season to about 120,000 mt.

Raw nuts still expensive
Farmers would like to regain the prices for raw nuts paid in years of frost, but buyers will hardly agree to that just to do them a favour. As shown in the table (prices quoted are from February each year) prices are still much higher than before the disastrous harvest of 2014. If the hazelnut production of 2016 had not also been disappointing prices would presumably be cheaper.

Relativity in prices
The lack of purchasing interest in relation to sufficient availability has caused prices to dip again last week. The effect of a stronger Turkish Lira, however, has been reflected in export prices which were slightly higher than the week before.
