ORDU. Extortionate interest rates are having a crippling effect for exporters. Although supplies will not be the issue for hazelnuts next season, financial constraints will make life difficult for the industry. Suppliers are also casting a nervous glance at Chile.

High interest rates impact trading

Leading exporters state that the whole sector is concerned with making quarterly loan payments to the banks, which is far from easy under current market conditions. Trouble is that high interest rates ranging between 38% and 50% in TRY are making it very hard for the industry to ensure healthy cash flows and to buy raw material supplies. Banks are not eager to issue new loans, not even to companies that always repay.
