ORDU. Opinions are divided as to how sustained the current price development is for hazelnuts in Turkey. Ferrero’s moves will also be decisive. September marked the worst start to the export season since 1985.

Curious turnaround

Last week, local prices hit an incredible TRY 350/kg (USD 8.40/kg) on the back of limited supplies. Now, however, it appears that the tables may be starting to turn. Prices have steadily decreased since Monday and ranged at TRY 320/kg (USD 7.70/kg) on Wednesday. The main reason is that many companies had to repay their debts at the end of the third quarter. As these debts were taken out with high interest rates some had to liquidate cargo for financial reasons and prices started to ease very quickly as soon as these volumes came into the market.
