Hazelnuts: raw kernel prices spark speculations

ORDU. Although hazelnut production is expected to hit a record in Turkey, prospects are far less encouraging in other countries. Politics, unfortunately, remain more decisive than supply and demand in Turkey. A scandal involving hazelnut paste has also hit the headlines.

Production to hit record in Turkey

In-shell production is expected to hit 800,000 mt in Turkey this year. As the risk of frost no longer exists no extensive losses should occur. Sudden frost has, by contrast, hit Italy. Production is expected to be much smaller than last year. The full extent of the damage still, however, needs to be assessed. This will take a few weeks. Frost is also reported to have impacted production in Georgia and in Azerbaijan. Turkey will certainly gain support from this.
