ORDU. Shock prevails in Turkey as buyers need to absorb a the current market situation for hazelnuts. Exporters are running a high risk in selling. September is showing signs of a very weak start to the new export season. The Central Bank has cut the key interest rate.

Record prices

Driven by crop losses and delays the market is chasing records in Turkey. Some traders are now offering TRY 310/kg for quality nuts. This is more than 50% higher than the TMO base price and heterogeneity remains. Suppliers and farmers may be issuing ads on social media to sell their stocks at these high rates, but most stakeholders along the supply chain prefer to hold on to their volumes. Consequently, trading is not really taking place despite 40-50% of the crop being in the market. Quality and small kernels are also an issue.
