ORDU. Buyers rejoice, sellers cut losses: so far this is the best description of the Turkish hazelnut market 2017.

The weak Turkish Lira ensures attractive offers for buyers from the Euro-region, in spite of higher prices for raw nuts. Turkish traders had expected prices to remain stable, however, which is why they are currently making losses. Export prices on the other hand were so low that even bulk purchasers like Ferrero found it interesting to participate in the market.

Export figures shown by country
Since the beginning of the season 2016/17 about 106.000 mt of hazelnuts were exported from Turkey – considerably less than last year around this time. In 2016 (Jan-Dec) Turkish exporters supplied a total of 227,556 mt of hazelnuts to foreign countries. Almost 102,000 mt went to Italy and Germany alone, amounting to almost 45% of the total, followed by France and Canada. The top 10 buyers of Turkish hazelnuts, apart from Turkey itself, procure 80% of total exports.
