NEW DELHI. India has postponed the implementation of higher tariffs on US products several times over the last twelve months in the hope of reaching an agreement. The new regulation has now, however, come into force.

120% on walnuts

At the beginning of June, India was stripped of privileges in trading with the US. Last weekend the government in India promptly responded with higher tariffs for 28 US products.

The decision to impose punitive tariffs had initially been taken in June 2018, when the US introduced import tariffs of 25% on steel and 10% on aluminium products. After the implementation had been postponed several times, higher import duties have now come into force. Apples, pulses and non-food products as well as almonds and walnuts are products, which are affected. The latter are to be subject to an import duty of 120% under the new regulation, duties hitherto only amounted to 30%.

India is the second most important export destination for US almonds, after China/Hong Kong. This season the country has so far imported 91,500 mt of almonds from the US, an increase of 12% over the same period last year. In May 2019 imports increased by 80% to 8,176 mt compared to the same month last year.
