Kiwis: Exports decline in Italy

ROME/WELLINGTON. The growers in New Zealand have finally won their case. The high Court has now ruled that the Ministry of Primary Industry (MPI) is to be held responsible for allowing PSA to enter the country from China in 2009. In a recently published report the USDA reckons that the 2017/18 production in Italy is not as bad as expected.

 

PSA damage estimated at NZD 450 million

The PSA outbreak in 2010 had a devastating impact on the crop and dire consequence for the growers. After eight long years the court has now ruled that the Ministry is to pay for damages, which are estimated at NZD 450 million. Production has recovered since then. New Zealand now faces quite another problem as there is not enough labour to harvest this year’s bumper crop.
