Macadamias: Drought impacts production in Australia

CANBERRA. The Australian Macadamia Society (AMS) has revised its production estimates.

Production to decline by 13%

Production is now expected to range at 42,900 metric tonnes, in-shell basis, which is a decline of 13% over last year. Intial estimates ranged 14% at 49,900 metric tonnes. The unusually long, dry and hot summer has impacted size and weight.

CEO Jolyon Burnett points out that this summer's weather conditions were highly unusual. "In addition to the very hot temperatures, we experienced abnormally low rainfall and humidity across all growing areas. Like any horticultural crop, we are susceptible to weather and unfortunately some year's it disrupts the best laid plans." Burnett further explains that, "we can't control the weather, however, should these conditions arise again in the future, we want to be able to identify the impact much earlier in the forecasting process. We're examining new measures to achieve this."

Global production remains stable

In taking the updated estimates for Australia into account, it can be said that global production should range at 225,428 metric tonnes, which is a similar volume as last year. The decline in production in Australia and other countries such as Kenya and Malawi will be offset, among other things, by the increase in production in China, where production is expected to rise by 40% to nearly 30,000 metric tonnes. Acreage currently amounts to around 200,000 hectares. Over the next few years, production is anticipated to rise sharply.
