Macadamias: promising outlook

High demand persists
The macadamia market has remained relatively firm over the past month. This is due to limited stocks from the previous season and a cautious sales strategy on the part of processors. March and April usually fall within the period when suppliers from all producing countries place their seasonal offers and numerous contracts are concluded. At the same time, some buyers limit themselves to meeting short-term demand as long as certain uncertainties regarding the 2026 crop remain, as the market experts at ofi state in their latest report.
Demand for macadamia kernels remains high. This has contributed to price levels remaining largely stable since the end of the previous season. Overall, the market appears balanced to slightly firm in the short term. A more pronounced price trend is expected in the coming four to six weeks as the harvest progresses and more accurate estimates of the crop volume become available.

Positive outlook
The outlook for the 2026 crop is generally positive across the main countries of origin. According to ofi, production volumes in Australia, South Africa and Kenya are expected to be higher than last year. The crop has developed favourably so far, supported by good weather conditions, although the weather during the harvest will continue to play a key role.
In South Africa, several weeks of persistent heavy rainfall in key growing regions have raised concerns about quality. Although nut development has generally been good, weather conditions could affect yield and quality. Market players are therefore monitoring the situation and weather forecasts closely, as potential quality losses could reduce the availability of high-quality kernels.
In Kenya, initial estimates point to a larger-than-expected crop. Sufficient rainfall has favoured nut development, and in some regions the start of the harvest is imminent. At the same time, potential changes to export regulations for inshell macadamias remain a key factor in market developments.
In Australia, a significant recovery of the crop volume is expected, supported by improved flowering conditions and the maturity of the plantations. Farmgate prices are roughly on a par with last year’s levels, whilst exchange rate movements are influencing export prices, according to ofi market experts.
