OTTAWA. Canadian authorities have once again revised their cultivation forecast for the 2026 mustard seed crop upwards. Under normal conditions, the crop should be able to considerably exceed the 5-year average.

Almost 198,000 hectares of mustard seeds

Mustard seeds appear to be gaining importance in the Canadian market this year. Statistics Canada had initially set the sowing area for the coming 2026 crop at 175,000 hectares, which would have been an increase of almost 20% over the previous year. However, according to current data from early March, Canadian farmers are expected to sow almost 198,000 hectares with mustard seeds for the 2026/27 season. With an average yield, production could rise to more than 155,000 mt this year, an increase of just under 12% compared to the 2025 crop. The 5-year average (2021-2025), however, is only 145,024 mt. Higher supply and more competitive prices would lower the barrier to entry for Canadian suppliers into the European market.

Prices for Canadian mustard seeds are currently relatively stable. According to the latest report from Rayglen Commodities, brown mustard seeds are currently being offered at a level of CAD 0.30-0.31/lb FOB farm, while prices for yellow mustard seeds are CAD 0.36-0.37/lb. There may be minor variations depending on the supplier and delivery period.

On the European spot market, prices for Moldovan mustard seeds, Sinapis Alba, 99.5% purity, are currently around EUR 780-800/mt DDP Germany.
