DALIAN. Chinese pumpkin seed exports are under pressure from intense competition, exchange rate risks and trade barriers. At the same time, EU-compliant goods are becoming increasingly scarce, prompting many buyers to stock up early.

Exchange rate fluctuations reduce competitiveness

Pumpkin seed production in China is continuing to expand, raising the prospect of potential overcapacity. To secure export orders, some companies are engaging in price competition. Furthermore, some suppliers are failing to establish their own brands or differentiate themselves from competitors. As a result, many products are very similar, which makes marketing them on international markets difficult.

Exchange rate fluctuations of the renminbi also affect the competitiveness of Chinese pumpkin seed exports. Furthermore, increasing trade restrictions are hampering the export business. Some countries restrict imports through tariffs and non-tariff trade barriers. Overall, exports are influenced by changes in international demand, rising quality requirements, higher logistics costs, intense domestic competition and trade policy risks.

Hardly any EU-quality goods

Despite the generally sufficient supply situation, stocks of EU-compliant goods have fallen to a critical level, as reported by the experts at Chelmer Foods. Many suppliers state that their existing stocks are almost depleted and may in some cases run out before the new crop arrives later in the summer. This increases uncertainty regarding supply during the transition period to the new crop. Against this backdrop, several buyers are currently securing their requirements further in advance than usual.
