OTTAWA. The reduced cultivation forecast for the 2025/2026 season is ensuring unusually stable prices in the Canadian market. Compared to the same period last year, EU countries have reduced their mustard seed imports by a total of 22%.

Market remains sceptical

In the Canadian mustard seed market, prices have stabilised again after the last upward correction and have now been at a level of CAD 0.44-0.45/lb for golden mustard seeds for several weeks in a row.

In March, Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada shocked the market with the forecast that the mustard seed acreage in Canada would fall by around 50% year-on-year to 117,000 ha, which would result in a 55.7% reduction in production to 85,000 mt at average yields. While market players are still sceptical about this drastic reduction, the estimates also mean that mustard seed prices are likely to remain stable for the time being at least, while price reductions are usually observed at this time of year.

EU imports far behind last year

Since the start of the 2024/2025 season (01/07/2024-20/04/2025), a total of 61,799 mt of mustard seeds worth EUR 45.341 million have been imported into the EU from third countries, meaning that the import volume has fallen by 22.1% year-on-year and the import value has even declined by 36.2%. This is partly due to the fact that imports from Russia fell significantly (-73.1% to 11,731 mt), but shipments from Canada also shrank by 3.8% to 18,131 mt. In contrast, however, imports from countries such as Ukraine (+61.0% to 21,644 mt), Kazakhstan (+244.7% to 8,118 mt) and Moldova (+728.2% to 1,706 mt) rose massively.

The most important buyer countries within the EU, such as Germany (-27.8% to 20,770 mt), Poland (-41.7% to 15,190 mt) and Belgium (-29.7% to 9,570 mt), have all significantly reduced their imports.

Prices for mustard seeds, Sinapis Alba, 99.95% purity, of Ukrainian origin were recently at a level of EUR 770/mt DDP Germany.
