OTTAWA/BRUSSELS. Experts have published their initial forecasts for the 2026/27 Canadian mustard seed season. An expansion of the acreage is expected. EU countries have increased their mustard seed imports by 10% in the current season.

More moderate yields expected

More mustard seed is to be grown in Canada again this year for the coming 2026/27 season. According to the latest report from Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada, this is due to the good profits made in the current season. In 2025, 146,000 ha (-40.4% compared to the previous year) were sown with mustard seeds, while an expansion of the acreage by 19.9% to 175,000 ha is expected for 2026. However, this would still be a significantly smaller area than in previous years. The much more generous yields of 0.97 mt/ha in the past season, which have been seen again for some time now, are expected to remain at a similar level to 2024/25, at 0.79 mt/ha. Under these conditions, the crop would be even lower than in the previous year at 135,000 mt, but the carry-over stocks from the current season would increase total availability to 289,000 mt (-1% compared to the previous year).

Canada is the most important supplier to the EU

Mustard seed imports into the EU remain at a high level. According to data from the European Commission, a total of 49,224 mt of mustard seeds was imported from third countries between 1 July 2025 and 1 February 2026, which is 10.2% more than at the same time last year. The import value for this period amounted to EUR 29.892 million (-13.5%), while the average import price fell by 20.8% to EUR 0.61/kg compared to the same period last year.

The higher imports are due, among other things, to imports from Brazil of 6,695 mt, which were recorded in the first month of the new season but have since stagnated. In addition, shipments from both Canada and Kazakhstan have increased by 7.2% to 15,038 mt and 16.8% to 7,133 mt respectively compared to the previous year. Although imports from Russia are also up 56.9% year-on-year to 9,506 mt, the country was the most important supplier until import duties were imposed on Russian agricultural products entering the EU. Meanwhile, shipments from Ukraine have fallen by 41.9% to 9,787 mt.

Shipments from Moldova have fallen by 28.9% compared to the previous year. The price indications for golden mustard seeds from Moldova are currently at a level of EUR 700/mt DDP Germany, although there may be variations depending on the supplier.

The most important customer within the EU is currently Belgium, which has increased its imports by a whopping 155.9% year-on-year to 16,760 mt. In contrast, both Germany (-23.9% to 11,230 mt) and Poland (-3.6% to 10,200 mt) reduced their imports during the above-mentioned period.
