Organic hazelnuts: Devastating prospects in Bulgaria

SOFIA. This year’s weather has proven to be a downright disaster for the hazelnut crop in Bulgaria.

High prices
The prices have risen by 1.00-2.00 EUR/kg since last year, depending of the variety and the roundness of the kernel. Since the prices are by no means compatible on the international market and imports are much cheaper, prices should actually come down. But the opposite is the case in Bulgaria.

Virtually no supplies
Acreage is very small in Bulgaria and after the bad weather struck, several cultivated orchards were left unharvested since the costs of collecting, sorting out, drying, and marketing the crop would have been higher than the expected revenues. At the very best, only as little as 70 mt can be marketed in 2016-17. To make matters worse, there are literally no carry-over stocks. As a result, the prices for locally grown hazelnuts will remain much higher than for imports.

NEW DELHI. A large proportion of the remaining stocks from the last peanut crop currently held in Indian warehouses no longer meet the required quality standards. This is putting downward pressure on prices, as is the prospect of larger acreage.
