FRANKFURT. A surprising shift has taken place regarding exports to the EU. Demand is also on the rise in Germany. Peanuts are a popular snack.

Global production

Cultivation in the USA started in the 18th century. It was as at first produced as feed and food for the poor. Things, however, changed in the 20th century when peanuts, which are actually classified as pulses, became the most important crop plant in the USA besides cotton.

Roasted and salted peanuts are a popular snack. Peanut butter is extremely popular in the USA. In Asia, peanut oil is commonly used for roasting and frying as it can stand higher temperatures than most edible oils.
