NEW DELHI. Demand for sowing seeds is high in India. For peanuts much also depends on developments in the Middle East conflict.

High demand for sowing seeds

Demand for seeds for sowing is high and has even prompted the government to sell at higher rates. Previous auction rates were around USD 78.00-78.50 per quintal and the latest prices range at USD 80.20-80.70 per quintal. The government has already sold 350,000 mt and will try to increase the speed and volume of selling. Rates have risen by 25-30% since last season. Subtle business is also continuing with Indonesia with prices ranging at USD 1,300-1,350/mt. Other southeast Asian nations are also buying.

Uncertain outlook

The war in the Middle East is also driving the market as there is a belief that oil will not be available. Retail sales have, consequently, risen sharply as household stocking has increased. Much will depend on how the conflict between the USA and Iran will unfold. As negotiations failed in Pakistan at the weekend and US President Donald Trump has announced a US blockade of the Strait of Hormuz the situation remains highly uncertain. Advice is to maintain a wait and watch position over the next week. Peanuts are trading higher.
