PEKING. With no chance of recovery in sight China must think up alternative measures to drive up prices. Subdued demand and the large crop in Russia have added considerable pressure to the market.

Prices have tumbled

China used to be the largest producer. Last year the situation changed dramatically with Russia taking top position. While China could demand prices as high as 25,000 USD/mt CFR Hamburg only one year ago they have now dropped by more than half to less than 10,000 USD/mt.

Due to the large supplies in other countries suppliers in China prefer to play it low and take no risks. Production is set to increase in China this year.
