Pine nuts: Russia holds key position in EU

BRUSSELS/REUS. Imports from Russia may have declined sharply for pine nuts since 2022, yet the country still holds a key position in the EU. Global production fell sharply in 2023/2024.

Russia to impose export duty

Russia will slap a 25% export duty or at least EUR 80 (USD 85) on in-shell pine nuts as of 1 August 2024 as local media report. This rate will rise to 50% or at least EUR 160 (USD 171) as of 1 August 2025. Objective is to increase high-value-added sales for pine nuts processed within the country. While the market initially lacked legal regulations and businesses simply purchased and exported in-shell pine nuts, this started to change in August 2023 when Korean pine nuts were classified as strategically important, which restricted the exp
