BEIJING. Germany increased its pine nut imports by more than 20% last year. Shipments from both China and Russia increased year-on-year.

Germany increases imports by 23%

Germany imported a total of 6,907 mt of pine nuts in 2021, almost a quarter more than the year before. Lower crops combined with supply shortages and delays as a result of Covid measures had initially affected shipments from China, which is why imports from Russia rose by 74% to 1,383 mt last year. Imports from Spain were also several times higher year-on-year at 285 mt.

Between September and December 2021, however, the ratio returned to normal. In the first four months of the 2021/2022 season, Germany imported a total of 2,399 mt of pine nuts, a good 400 mt more than in the same period last year. At 1,860 mt, imports from China were around 700 mt higher than in the previous year, while shipments from Russia fell by just under 150 mt to 292 mt. How the latter will develop in the further course of the season remains to be seen.
