PEKING. Reports state that two major producing countries have already put a stop to production and trade with pine nuts. A third player is, however, expected to compensate this breakdown.

China is to compensate for breakdown in production

Since 2018/2019 it is no longer possible to consider Mongolia in any global production data. As a means of protecting the ecosystem the country has decided to stop harvesting and exporting pine nuts for three years. North Korea has also stopped trading in pine nuts.

Nevertheless, in-shell production is expected to climb to 71,000 metric tonnes in the Far East. Production in China should thereby increase more than fivefold to 45,000 metrioc tonnes. At the same time, however, the current report of the International Nut and Dried Fruit Council (INC) states that fewer pine nuts are expected to be harvested in Russia, Afghanistan and Pakistan. According to current estimates, production in the Mediterranean may rise to 12,600 metric tonnes, which is an increase of 12.5% over last year. Total in-shell production is to range at 83,660 metric tonnes.
