FRESNO/TEHRAN. Aflatoxin still is an issue for US pistachios. Suppliers in the Middle East report more complex trading dynamics due to the war. US growers anticipated a good crop despite a very hot summer.

As Olam reports in the “Global Nuts Market & Crop Update” for March elevated aflatoxin levels are prompting US suppliers to divert shipments away from the EU. Trouble is that higher insect pressure drove up aflatoxin levels while the harvest was ongoing. In fact, US pistachios witnessed an upsurge in EU border rejections and notifications in 2025 mainly due to aflatoxin with officials issuing as many as 29 rejections and 13 alerts or notifications as the RASFF data portal shows.
