FRESNO. According to the Pistachio Industry Inventory Shipments Report issued by the Administrative Committee for Pistachios (ACP) monthly exports soared in January but failed to set a record. Domestic shipments only showed a moderate rise. China has redirected its supply chain.

Monthly exports soar

At 22 million pounds, monthly domestic shipments ranged a bit higher than in January last year. Monthly exports may have soared by 54% on last year to 62 million pounds yet did not quite match the 81 million pounds shipped in January 2023/2024. Total shipments amounted to 83 million pounds in January, which is 34% up on the 62 million pounds shipped in January 2025 but falls 19% short of the record 103 million pounds shipped in January 2024.

China redirects supply chain

At 575 million pounds the grand total shipments for the season range 24% higher than last year. While domestic shipments have recovered by 4%, exports are the main driver as they have risen by 30%. Several countries, especially in Asia, are showing triple-digit growth rates, most notably Vietnam, which has taken China’s place as top export destination for US pistachios this season. Shipments to Hong Kong have risen more than tenfold and to Malysia more than fivefold with China, to where shipments have slumped by 89%, redirecting supply chains to neighbouring countries. Shipments to Asia have, in fact, climbed by 16% this season so far to 207 million pounds as compared with the 178 million pounds registered in the first five months of 2024/2025.

Germany is showing a rather modest 4% rise in shipments from the USA. Exports to other EU member states such as Spain with 22% or Italy with 101% have risen more sharply. At 143 million pounds shipments to Europe stand 29% higher than last year’s 111 million pounds.

US exports to Turkey, the United Arab Emirates and Saudia Arabia have also risen sharply. Shipments to the Middle East and Africa have surged by 99% to 91 million pounds. The estimated marketable inventory stands at 818 million pounds.
