Pistachios: Iran may be forced to withdraw from export trade

TEHRAN. Drought has had a massive impact on this year’s pistachio production in Iran. The volumes available for export are much reduced.

 

Production slumps in Iran

Pistachios are one of Iran's most important export goods. In recent years, however, water shortages, pests and the economic situation have rendered cultivation difficult. Acreage is estimated at 360,000 ha. With an area of 270,000 ha, the province of Kerman is the main cultivation region.

Unfavourable weather conditions at the beginning of this year have reduced yields considerably. Only as little as 50,000-60,000 mt of in shells have been harvest, ca. 75% less than last year. The disappointing crop is driving up pric
