SACRAMENTO. After a disappointing 2015/16 season, the USA is back with impressive export data. The market captain Iran has to get ready to face stiff competition.

After the USA suffered a decrease in production of almost 50% in 2015 and exports in the 2015/16 season collapsed by approx. 25% compared to the previous year, meanwhile a different wind is blowing. With 133,135 mt, exports have more than tripled in the current season compared to the same period last year. The main buyer is Hong Kong with 41,685 mt, closely followed by China with 32,183 mt. Germany trails far behind in third place with 9,890 mt.

Massive increases
US exports have increased considerably, especially in Asia and in Africa as well as in the Middle East. In contrast, the rise was much smaller in Europe with almost 60%. So it comes as no surprise that US producers are mainly interested in China and Vietnam.

The race between the USA and Iran remains exciting
However, President Trump's backing out of the negotiations for the Trans-Pacific Partnership dashed all hopes of being able to circumvent the high import duty of 25% in Vietnam in the near future. Since Iran was not involved in the agreement, this could have given the USA a decisive competitive edge. Throughout the past 5 years, 40% of global exports came from Iran and 37% from the USA. Moreover, Iran is increasing its efforts to comply with the strict aflatoxin threshold values for the EU, which could cause the USA to lose important market shares. Another point that is giving producers a headache is the political relationship with China.
