TEHRAN. After the disappointing pistachio harvest last year, the market players in Iran expect a significantly better result in the new season.

Production estimated at 220,000 mt

Experts reckon that production will rise to 220,000 mt in 2019/20, a steep increase over this season’s 50,000-70,000 mt. At the same time, market players in the US and Turkey benefitted from good production and sales figures.

Large crops are becoming a rare occasion

Fresh, but not too cool temperatures in March and April, and sufficient rainfall have rendered the market optimistic for this year's crop. Last year the pistachios suffered from heat and drought during the flowering period. The decline in production was particularly noticeable for the Fandoghi and Kalle Ghuchi varieties. Although the production of these varieties is to remain relatively small this year, the estimates for the varieties Akbari, Badami and Ahmad Aghai are very promising.

In Rafasnjan, the largest growing region in Iran, an average of 35,000 mt are harvested on 80,000 hectares every year. This year, unfavourable weather conditions are expected to reduce production by 6,000 mt to 29,000 mt. This figure still is, however, ten times higher than last year. In a good year such as in 2017, however, the pistachio harvest in Rafasnjan can also rise to 65,000 mt. These volumes should be achieved again in 2020, that is if the farmers maintain the shrubs accordingly. Due to the climate change it is now reckoned that large crops will only be achieved every third to fourth year instead of every second year.
