ISTANBUL. Manipulations are rife in Turkey. People cannot afford the current high prices for pistachios. To make matters worse, the industry is already gearing up for next season.

Locals cannot afford high prices

For suppliers the Dubai Chocolate hype was a welcome excuse to drive up the market in Turkey. Prices also rose at the start of the year and manipulations have recently caused some upheaval. Despite production reaching a record 415,000 mt this season as INC statistics show and demand being good, waters are expected to remain rough.

Demand from the EU is stable but local consumption has eased as people cannot afford the current high prices. Quotations have eased in the past two weeks after manipulators drove up the market. Yet,
