Pistachios: surprising start-of-season prices

SACRAMENTO/TEHRAN. Traders in Europe are taken by surprise at the current prices for US pistachios. US exports declined by 25% in 2024/2025. Crop estimates are highly encouraging in California and in Iran.

Traders taken by surprise

Reports highlighting the low carry-over stocks in the USA already hinted at the direction the market would be moving in at the start of the season. According to the Administrative Committee for Pistachios (ACP) the estimated marketable inventory, in fact, stood at 119.581 million pounds, which is a sharp 35% down on last year’s very low carry-over of 184.606 million pounds. Yet, this the not the main driver for the current price trend.
