Almonds: impossibly low prices in Spain

MADRID. While almond harvesting started in Aragon in Spain last week, dryland almond yields are said to have declined by 25% in Catalonia. Fierce debates over impossibly low prices are also heating market sentiments.

Production to range on similar level as last year

As Aragon's Association of farmers and cattle breeders reports harvesting is underway and production is expected to range at 16,552 mt, which is nominally lower than last year's 16,849 mt. The Farmers' Association of Catalonia, however, reports that dryland almond yields range as much as 25% lower than last year. This decline should be offset by a rise in yields in irrigated orchards and by orchards, which are expected to produce significant volumes for the first time.
