Walnuts: Chandler light halves become scarce in Europe

SACRAMENTO/SANTIAGO. A shortage of the popular Chandler light halves has caused prices on the European spot market to rise by up to 25% within a very short time. Market players continue to hold back on information about the upcoming Chilean crop.

Shortage despite record crop

After the USA had achieved a record crop this season, the trade was slightly concerned about how the large quantity would be sold in pandemic times - however, this concern now turns out to be unfounded. By the end of December, the crop volume was already estimated at 693,680 mt of walnuts in shell and market players expect the total crop of the current season to be about 20% higher than in the 2019/2020 season.
