Sunflower seeds: differing opinions on where prices are headed

SOFIA. This season's high prices have stirred panic in the sunflower seed market. While some buyers reckon that there is worse to come, other opinions differ. With sowing about to start in Bulgaria, speculations over the new crop will set the agenda.

Bakery kernels are approaching price levels not witnessed since September 2012 when they climbed as high as EUR 1.28/kg due to considerable crop losses. Some buyers are nearly panicking as they reckon that prices will continue to rise next season. Others, however, think that there is a good chance that the price surge may be stopped. Much depends on the new crop and the response of the buyers to the current market situation.
