TEHRAN. The pandemic is certainly far from over and the economic backlash is felt in the date market. Domestic supplies are normally very much depleted at the start of Ramadan. Things are, however, different this year. Although around half the month of Ramadan is over, large inventories remain. The cold storage supplies in Bushehr Province give a hint as to how critical the situation may become.

Farmers are left looking for customers

Bushehr Province accounts for around 13% of Iran’s date production with annual production ranging at around 160,000-170,000 mt. More than 90,000 mt of dates can be processed and converted here. Domestic supplies are normally much depleted at the start of Ramadan, but this year farmers are left waiting for customers. The Agricultural Organization of Bushehr Province estimates that around 30,000 mt of dates remain unsold in cold storage warehouses. Market players reckon that these large supplies will be a matter of concern
