SANTIAGO. China is the leading export destination by far for Chilean prunes. Mexico is the most important trading partner in America and Poland in Europe. The USA have the highest return rate.

Asian giant heads chart

Chile exported 34,000 mt of prunes worth USD 100 million to as many as 69 countries on five different continents in the first six months of the year. According to official customs data issued by the Chilean government China tops the chart as leading export destination accounting for a stunning 30% of the export volume and 25% of the export value.

Mexico follows next with a much smaller volume below 3,000 mt. After Mexico, the main destinations in Latin America are Colombia, Peru and Brazil. These destinations did not, however, make it to the top ten export destinations for Chilean prunes.

Poland ranks third in terms of volume, whereas importers in Germany spent more. The UK, Spain and Italy are further destinations in Europe ranking in amongst the top ten export destinations for Chile. 10 kg boxes of Elliot dried plums from Chile are currently trading a bit higher than last week at EUR 2.98/kg (USD 3.45/kg) FCA Poland.

While the USA only ranks sixth in terms of volume, the country shows the highest return rate over USD 14 million after China. Average export prices ranged highest here at USD 6.64/kg.

Suppliers emphasise that Chile has been the leading global supplier of prunes for many years and that big producing countries such as the US, France and Argentina buy volumes here.
