DALIAN. The prospect of a smaller pumpkin seed production this year is prompting suppliers to think twice about how to offer their stocks in the next few months.

Price scale

The price trend is rising, but some traders are not offering deliveries for later than September – and then already with pumpkin seeds from the new crop. There are occasional outliers, as pumpkin seeds, Shine Skin, Grade A are also being offered starting at 2,070 USD/mt CFR Hamburg for prompt delivery.

Risk of speculation

Official figures are not published in China, and therefore the market must rely on statements from farmers and seed traders for crop estimates.

The new season could be just what speculators were waiting for, while surpluses are expected from the 2016 crop. As a result, it is hardly possible to reliably estimate price developments in the next few weeks. The condition of stocks remaining from the current season also remains to be seen. As long as the pumpkin seeds were stored in-shell at cool temperatures, the quality losses should be minimal. Especially for GWS seeds. However, buyers should now insist upon a pesticide analysis.
