Pumpkin seeds: The cost of quality

DALIAN. Chinese pumpkin seeds are still having a hard time in the baking and snack industry. The sometimes very favourable price level does seem to suggest, though, that some traders are pushing down prices to stay in business by mixing seeds from the old crop with the new.

 

Grade A and Grade A are not always the same thing
Pumpkin seeds, Grade A (GWS and Shine Skin) are becoming ever cheaper. By mixing in old seeds, Chinese suppliers can further reduce prices. This, however, is affecting the quality as there is no official standard for Grade A and the traders can freely interpret the quality level to a certain extent, as long as the buyers do not object. Depending on the variety, customers are having to pay around 150-300 USD/mt more for average Grade A quality.
