Reduced sowing due to low prices
Due to last year's low prices, the acreage for Chinese pumpkin seeds has fallen by around 40% this year. Market players currently estimate the crop volume at 150,000-170,000 mt, with the main growing areas in Xinjiang, Inner Mongolia and north-eastern China. The popular Lady Nails variety is an exception in terms of acreage, as sowing here is expected to be even higher than last year. At the end of August, the harvest of the 2025 pumpkin seeds had already begun in northern Xinjiang, with the south following in mid-September.
Speculators influence the market
At present, Farmerland's market experts do not expect prices to fall sharply. On the contrary, it is assumed that prices are likely to rise as soon as speculators enter the scene and buy large quantities of pumpkin seeds for stockpiling; this pattern repeats itself annually on the Chinese pumpkin seed market. Prices for GWS kernels, which were relatively low in 2024, could be supported this year by the expected small crop of only around 15,000 mt. GWS kernels, Grade A, currently cost USD 3,240/mt CFR Hamburg, while Shine Skins, Grade A, are trading at USD 2,290/mt. Strict pesticide regulations continue to pose a problem for shipments to the EU, which has already led to some Chinese exporters refusing to deliver their goods to the EU.
