DALIAN. Farmers are refusing toll sell pumpkin seeds at current rates. Traders report a hoarding hype for organic seeds.

At a crossroads

Trading has resumed again gradually in China after the Golden Week. As prices are unacceptable for many farmers they intend to hold back for as long as it takes for prices to turn satisfactory. Snow white pumpkin seeds are now trading in a stable range. The conflicts in the Middle East and Russia have reduced demand. As planting has risen sharply the shine skin crop is around 30% bigger and supply exceeds demand. Prices have already tumbled to the lowest point with farmers not wishing to sell. They would normally rise as soon as the market fluctuates at this point in the season. GWS kernels are trading in a narrow range and are declining to a limited extent.

Adverse weather conditions impact organic crop

Prices are, in general, so low that they cannot fall much further. If some orders are issued after the SIAL, which will be held in Paris on 19-23 October, the market may rise. The organic pumpkin kernels for Europe are mainly grown in Northeastern China and although the planting area has risen a bit this year, natural disasters have reduced output by more than 50%. A hoarding hype is perceptible at present. Raw material prices have risen by more than USD 100/mt in recent weeks. Expectation is that prices will continue to rise. Export prices will gradually reach last year's level.
